2. PHILIPPINES. Cebu, Oslob. Whale sharks
Perhaps one of the most exciting excursions on the island of Cebu is swimming with whale sharks. The local name is whale sharks tuki. They are considered the largest fish on the planet. The length of an adult reaches 12-20 meters.
Tourists are taken to the sea in small motor boats with bang balance.
Whale sharks are not dangerous to humans. They feed on plankton, krill, small fish, squid. They swallow water, and then, like whales, filter their feed from it.
Local fishermen feed sharks. That is why tourists have the opportunity to look at giant fish so closely.
From 6 to 12 days (excursions take place only at this time), several workers swim in boats and throw handfuls of shrimp in the shark's mouth. They move along the coast, and the giants follow them.
Whale sharks are leisurely. But the instructors still require swimmers to keep a distance of 5 meters from the head and 6 meters from the tail.
It is an incredible feeling when such a huge creature swims near you. Although you understand that it is not dangerous, it is breathtaking from such power.
What to bring with you: Swimsuit (better for surfing t-shirts with long sleeves), aquabot and towel. Masks and vests are issued on site. Be sure to use sunscreen.
Photos and video: take GoPro. Do not risk phones and cameras that are not designed for shooting in water. Shooting is permitted only without a flash.
By the way, you can rent a camera from local people. It costs 600 pesos (approximately $ 12.00)
It is impossible:
Swim closer to sharks than 5m
Throw trash into the sea
Shoot with a flash
Catch marine inhabitants, break corals, etc.
Travel agencies arrange regular excursions. You will be picked up from the hotel or school, will be escorted all day, fed dinner, and returned to the collection point again in the evening.
Departure: at 4 - 5 in the morning. The road takes 4-5 hours.
Tour Duration: 12 hours
Tour price: 3000 pesos (~ 60 USD). You can only be in the water for 30 minutes. The rest of the time is a briefing, rest on the beach, etc.
Sharks do not live in Oslob, but in the water area near the village of Tan-Awan, which is still 10 km to the south. We recommend you to arrive at the hotel day and night. This will allow you to sleep longer in the morning and get on the first boats.
How to get there
Buses to South Bus Terminal go to Oslob (here you can see the schedule). The earliest in 1. Usually they are without air conditioning (but this is not so important, it is not hot at night). Last at 11:00.
The bus station is small, so do not be afraid to get lost. Just read the signs on the buses or ask the drivers. They all speak a little English.
