In 2021, the Philippines and its entire Catholic community will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the introduction of Christianity in the country. It will also be the 500th commemoration of the arrival of the image of Sto. Nino in Cebu.
It was on April 14, 1521 that the image was given to Queen Juana as a gift from Ferdinand Magellan after she was baptized together with Rajah Humabon and a good number of natives.
The friars of the Order of Saint Augustine (Augustinians) of the Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu-Philippines, the caretakers of the miraculous image since its finding in 1565 and the first
missionaries in the country, have outlined necessary preparations for the said event.
This official launching forms part of the series of activities in commemoration of the quincentennial anniversary of the arrival of Santo Niño. This historic milestone commences this year and will culminate in 2021.
